What is Maca?

Green Origins Maca is grown high in the Peruvian Andes. This is its native territory and is held in high regard by the local people. In Peru, almost every part of the plant is utilised and legend has it that it was consumed by the Incan warriors prior to battle to increase their fighting spirit. It has historically been used to enhance strength, stamina and libido.

Green Origins Maca is grown organically in Peru at an altitude of over 4000m. The growing season is eight months long, which gives time for the nutritional profile to develop fully. It is then dried for three months in the open air before being cleaned and broken into small pieces. These pieces are then processed to break down starch molecules and make the nutrients more easily absorbed by the human body.

There are several variants of maca which express themselves in the colour of the root. It can be cream, green, red, purple, grey or black. Fundamentally they have the same basic wide nutritional profile, but they exhibit slightly different phytonutrients. For this reason, Green Origins Maca Powder contains an equal blend of all 4 phenotypes, by using red, yellow, purple and black roots.
